One of my customers called me last week with a strange problem, Information Design Tool (IDT) 4.2 didn’t start when she clicked the icon in the start menu.

Headset / Mic used for recording - USA -. Also watch - Create a Uni. Then I opened “SAP BUSINESS OBJECT INFORMATION DESIGN TOOL” which contains 2 layers i.e. BUSINESS LAYER & FOUNDATION LAYER. In the IDT we can see when it open up that in left hand side there are list of local projects on top and down to that there is repository resources list.
After some digging and testing I found out what the problem was.

The things I tested
- Restart the computer, didn’t work.
- rename the folder C:Users<username<.businessobjectsbimodeler_14 to bimodeler_14_old and restart the IDT. This should create a new BImodeler_14 folder which you can then move the workspaces folder to and recreate all projects in IDT with the same names as before.
This didn’t work for us since the folder bimodeler_14 was not recreated so I renamed the folder back to bimodeler_14. - run Informationdesigntool.exe > c:out.txt
Check the contents of out.txt
In my case it contained the text Abort …
This basically means that the java installation is not found or corrupt.
My workaround/solution
Locate the file InformationDesignTool.ini in the BO install folder/SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0win32_x86 and open it in a text editor.
Locate the line that starts with -vm. The next line might say something like sapjvmbin.
Check your win32_x86 folder and look for a folder that starts with jre like jre or jre8 and replace the sapjvm in the InformationDesignTool.ini with that foldername. The line should then read jrebin or jre8bin.
If the line reads jrebin, you could try to replace it with sapjvmbin.
The start of my file looks like this now:
Save and close the InformationDesignTool.ini file and start the InformationDesignTool again, the program could take some time to launch during the first launch after the change.
